Acknowledgments & Accolades

Project Aurora, a work of art by Dr. Wanda Gregory, lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences; Ginny Ruffner, renowned glass artist; and Ed Fries, former head of Microsoft Xbox, is on display at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle through June 2. The 20-foot light installation using AI programming was inspired by the northern lights of Iceland, where Gregory spent five months as a Fulbright Scholar.

Dr. Stefanie Iverson Cabral, assistant teaching professor in the School of Nursing & Health Studies, has been named to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Science Ambassador Program. After a week at the CDC over the summer, Iverson Cabral will work virtually over the next year to develop STEM curriculum and promote public health.

Dr. Nora Kenworthy, associate professor in the School of Nursing & Health Studies, received a Royalty Research Award for “Digital therapeutic itineraries of patients managing chronic living in the U.S.: A participatory research study.”

The following faculty have received funding from UW Bothell’s Scholarship, Research and Creative Practice Seed Grant Program. This program — supported by the Division of Academic Affairs with up to $250,000 total in awards annually — is intended to support faculty in all disciplines.

The Division of Academic Affairs has announced recipients of its awards that recognize exemplary performance and dedication to advancing our academic mission. Kristen Labrecque, Natural Science & Pre-Health Professional Pathway adviser, has received the Distinguished Partner Award. Nhi P. Tran, assistant director for Student Success and Initiatives, has received the Distinguished Accomplishments Award.

Celia Hernandez-Dominguez, a senior in Education Studies, and Aditi Nambiar, a junior in Media & Communication Studies, have each received a 2024 Student Civic Leadership Award sponsored by the Washington Campus Coalition and bestowed by Chancellor Kristin G. Esterberg.

Husky Highlights series
Husky Highlights is a series featuring UW Bothell faculty and staff who are making advances in research, scholarship and creative practice.
On Tuesday, April 2, 3:30-5 p.m, Dr. Adam Romero, associate professor in the School of IAS, will present “The crisis of abundance: Industrial chemicals and the problem of too much food” online only. Register to receive the Zoom link.
On Tuesday, April 23, 3:30-5 p.m., Dr. Ursula Valdez, lecturer in the School of IAS, will present “Avian communities in the North Creek wetlands: integration of research, teaching, and learning” in the Campus Library (LB1), room 205. Immediately afterward, stay for a student-focused event that includes activities, discussion or Q&A related to the topic. Learn more and register.

Exploring AI in Learning and Teaching
Join a cross-disciplinary panel for an introduction to the breadth of AI and how it is used in industry and higher education. Learn more and register for this online session on Friday, April 5, 1:30-3 p.m.

Partnership in an unequal world
The UW Office of Global Affairs is hosting a virtual workshop series that will explore what it means to have mindful teaching, collaboration and program building in an unequal world. The workshops will engage participants — faculty, staff and students — in hands-on activities and discussions about how to navigate issues of reciprocity and structural inequality, and how to meaningfully collaborate with international partners.
This workshop series is co-facilitated by the School of IAS’ Dr. Ben Gardner, associate professor, and Dr. Ron Krabill, professor, along with Dr. Anu Taranath, teaching professor in the UW’s Department of English. Register for the workshop on Tuesday, April 9, Friday, April 26 and Tuesday, May 14.

UW Teaching & Learning Symposium
This symposium at Kane Hall in Seattle on Tuesday, April 16, 1-2:30 p.m., will feature a keynote address, "Empowering students through our teaching,” and a panel discussion with UW faculty. Learn more and register.

What is disability justice?
The Equity Across the Curriculum Initiative will host a webinar designed to help faculty, staff and students understand disability justice and how it plays out in university settings. Register by Monday, April 15, for the event on Wednesday, April 17, 2-4 p.m.

Help first-generation students to succeed
Join the Office of Student Academic Success for a viewing party of “Finding the right connections for first-generation students with imposter syndrome,” a webinar presented by the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success on Tuesday, April 23, 2:30-4 p.m. The viewing party will meet in Founders Hall (UW1), room 103.

Chief Justice presentation open to all
The campus community is invited to attend an online presentation for the business law course taught by Dr. Laura Umetsu, lecturer in the School of Business. Chief Justice Steven González, who presides over the Washington Supreme Court, will discuss several court cases, including a lawsuit by a couple whose longtime florist declined service of their same-sex wedding. Applications due May 1: Travel grants for exploratory visits
The Office of Connected Learning is offering travel grants for faculty and staff to support the costs of developing a new global program such as study abroad or COIL. Amounts awarded are $6,000, with some conditions up to $10,000. Learn more and apply.

Applications due May 19: Evidence-based Teaching Fellowship Connect with faculty colleagues and identify ways to integrate AI into your teaching during this two-year fellowship. Learn more and apply.

Innovations & Improvements

Just minutes to make a lasting impression
Encourage your first-year and senior-level students to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement, the findings of which will help UW Bothell provide better support for all students. The 15-minute survey will be available April 8-May 13, and all students who complete it will be entered into a drawing for one of 50 Amazon gift cards worth $20 each.

Learn how to prevent hazing
Visit this new UW website for important information on policies, practices, services and programs to prevent hazing across the UW tri-campus community. Required hazing prevention training will begin for UW faculty, staff and students in autumn quarter 2024, with more information shared at the unit level about specific timing and deadlines.

Optimizing waste collection schedules and capacities
Sonar sensors recently installed within waste and recycle receptacles across campus will enhance UW Bothell’s robust sustainability efforts. The sensors are designed to deliver precise data crucial for sustainability reporting and certification processes. The technology not only contributes to credible environmental stewardship but also ensures significant cost savings.

The Student Technology Fee is a student-led initiative that allocates funds to support innovative projects and advancements in technology across campus. These funds, generated from a quarterly fee paid by students, serve as a catalyst for progress, empowering the UW Bothell community to implement cutting-edge solutions that address emerging needs. Submissions due April 22: Climate Fiction Awards
The Campus Library’s Community Reads programming this year includes writing awards for visionary fiction. The awards are inspired by the book “Afterglow: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors,” which was created as a result of Grist’s Imagine 2200 contest. The awards are funded by the School of IAS Environmental Humanities Support Fund. Learn more about the awards.

Spring quarter parking options
Commuter Services is offering several options for parking on campus during spring quarter. The spring 2024 permit is the best option for those on a set schedule or who expect to be on campus more than three days per week. The flex permit option is best for those working on campus two or three days per week, on varying days each week. The PayByPhone option is the best option for paying daily or hourly.
