A UW study analyzed 25 years of satellite images using AI techniques to find that methane emissions in Turkmenistan, a former Soviet republic and major oil producer, actually increased in the years following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It suggests something else must be responsible for the temporary slowdown in methane emissions in the 1990s.
