Set your new faculty up for success: Faculty Welcome Week is coming!

New Faculty Onboarding Sept. 11–12, 2025 | Hybrid Format
As part of Faculty Welcome Week, organized with more than seven offices and partners across our campuses beginning the week of Sept. 8, 2025, New Faculty Onboarding provides a comprehensive overview of research resources, academic policies and professional development opportunities, along with chances to connect across disciplines and campuses.

Please share the New Faculty Onboarding registration link with any new faculty hires in your department or unit so they can fully engage in this essential onboarding experience. Invitations and registration details are being sent directly to new hires and are also available on the New Faculty@UW webpage, where you can see more about Welcome Week activities and access University-wide onboarding resources.

We know each school, college and department has its own approach to welcoming new colleagues. Your feedback is welcome — if there are additional ways central resources can better support your onboarding efforts, please reply to this message.

Thank you for helping the UW’s newest faculty start their journey with the support and connections they need to thrive.

Give your new academic leaders a strong start: leadership onboarding registration open

New Academic Leader Onboarding Sept. 15–16, 2025 | Hybrid Format
Newly appointed academic unit leaders — department chairs, directors, deans and chancellors — have a valuable development opportunity through the Office for Academic Personnel and Faculty (APF).

The annual program offers two distinct sessions to orient new leaders and foster University-wide connections on Monday, September 15 from 8 a.m.–12:45 p.m. in-person at HUB 332 (Seattle campus) and Tuesday, September 16 from 1–3:45 p.m. via Zoom.

Please help us make sure newly appointed leaders in your area are aware of this opportunity and register by September 9. Although invitations and registration links are sent directly to them, your support is key to ensuring they don’t miss this important leadership development experience.

New guidance available: navigate the UW's updated tenure status and A/B salary changes

Starting in 2025, the University of Washington will implement six new tenure-status categories in Workday, moving beyond the simple "tenured" or "not tenured" designations following an internal audit of A/B retention arrangements.

The updated system uses "tenure value" percentages to show how much of each faculty appointment is backed by state funds. Traditional tenured faculty maintain 100% protection, while others may have significantly less — sometimes as low as 50%.

Key categories include: faculty with full state backing ("tenured" or "pending"), those expected to self-fund portions of their salary ("partial"), and those with retention packages that reduce their tenure-backed percentage ("A/B retention").

The distinctions matter: "Partial" faculty may need to reduce responsibilities if external funding falls short, while "A/B retention" faculty maintain full duties with salary adjustments as needed.

Access the full implementation details on the New Tenure-Status Flags and A/B Salary Guidance webpage.

O-1A/EB-1B Sponsorship Pilot Program for outstanding international faculty

The Provost and Vice Provost for APF have announced a pilot program to expand UW visa sponsorship for outstanding international faculty. Effective Sept. 1, 2025, the International Scholars Operations (ISO) team will work with the UW Attorney General’s Office and outside immigration counsel to support requests for O-1 (Extraordinary Ability), EB-1B (Outstanding Researcher/Professor), and H-1B Conrad waiver sponsorship for new or ongoing faculty.

This program is expected to alleviate hiring and retention challenges for outstanding international faculty. See our blog post for more information, and send any questions to [email protected]. More details about these visa types and processes will be available online soon.

International Scholars Operations walk-in hours (08/25–09/23)

ISO has new walk-in service hours, effective Monday, August 25 to September 23, 2025:
  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays: 11 a.m.–12 p.m.
  • Thursdays & Fridays: By appointment only
Photo ID is required for document pick-up. Walk-in services are limited to brief questions, DS-2019 travel signatures, and document drop-off or pick-up. For longer inquiries, schedule an appointment outside these hours. Please contact ISO to schedule an appointment or to inquire about walk-in hour services.
