Maximum appointment terms for assistant, associate, and full appointees on the teaching track are 5, 7, and 10 years, respectively. However, according to Faculty Code 24-41, Section C, the minimum appointment period is typically three years. A recent audit of teaching track reappointments for 2023–24 revealed that many were reappointed for terms of less than three years, contrary to the Faculty Code's intent.
In light of the introduction of the clinical practice track, which follows the same appointment term structure (Faculty Code 24-41, Section E), OAP has updated the Professorial Faculty Titles and Ranks page to remind units that a three-year appointment term is the standard minimum for teaching track appointees.
Although initial appointments or reappointments to terms of less than three years remain possible, they will now necessitate exceptional approval. Such requests are expected to be rare, supported by a compelling rationale, and submitted to [email protected] well in advance of recruitment or reappointment decisions.
Units with teaching track appointees currently serving terms of less than three years are expected to either align with the three-year standard minimum upon the next reappointment consideration or obtain the required exceptional approval.
