Acknowledgments & Accolades
|
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation is investing $1.5 million in a project led by Dr. Shima Abadi, associate professor in the School of STEM. The project will explore the use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing, an innovative approach that could be a breakthrough in conservation efforts and potentially have a significant impact on protecting orca whales from the effects of maritime traffic.

COIL/Study Abroad launch grants have been awarded: Dr. Linda Eaton, assistant professor, and Dr. Jamie Shirley, teaching professor, both in the School of Nursing & Health Studies, will develop “Population Health in a Developing Country” in partnership with Christian Medical College in Vellore, India.
Dr. Paola Rodriguez Hidalgo, associate professor in the School of STEM, will develop two global programs with partners in Spain, including an interdisciplinary study abroad program to coincide with the August 2026 total solar eclipse.

Dr. Sharon A. Jones, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, has been selected to participate in the American Association of State Colleges & University’s Millennium Leadership Initiative. MLI is rooted in preparing higher education leaders from traditionally underrepresented communities with the skills, philosophical overview and networks necessary to advance to the highest ranks of postsecondary education.

Felicity Abeyta, pre-major adviser, has received UW Bothell’s 2024 Outstanding Public Service Award for her dedication to the Latino Leadership Initiative and for helping to create strong pathways for Latinx youth to achieve their dreams.

Dr. Raissa DeSmet, associate teaching professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, is the recipient of UW Bothell’s 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award. The award is presented each year in recognition of teaching that richly exemplifies the high standards at the heart of UW Bothell’s academic mission. According to the selection committee, “Her commitment involves disrupting traditional narratives, engaging students in critical inquiries and fostering identity-centered learning communities, aligning seamlessly with the University's mission.” Read DeSmet’s story on our website.

Dr. Shauna Elbers Carlisle, associate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, is the recipient of the UW Alumni Association’s 2024 Distinguished Teaching Legacy Award, the first UW Bothell faculty member to receive the award since it began in 2017. The award recognizes UW teachers who inspire and influence their students long after they leave their classroom. One former student wrote, “Her passion for research and addressing health disparities has led to my own interest in health law and legal scholarship. I am currently in law school and have been selected for an internship with the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” Read Elbers Carlisle’s story on our homepage later this month.

Dr. Jin-Kyu Jung, professor in the School of IAS, has received UW Bothell’s 2024 Outstanding Community Engaged Scholar Award for the global reach of his work to engage communities in geography projects on three continents. His lengthy engagement locally has resulted in his former students becoming employed by community partners and now serving as liaisons with his current community-engaged courses.

Dr. Sophie Leroy, professor in the School of Business, is the recipient of UW Bothell’s 2024 Distinguished Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity Award. The award recognizes, among other accomplishments, Leroy’s pathbreaking research in interruption and productivity. According to the selection committee, “Dr. Leroy has significantly advanced the understanding of interruption's effects on productivity, pioneering the concept of Attention Residue and developing theories and measures to study interruptions' consequences.” Read Leroy’s story on our website.

Dr. Yolanda Padilla, associate professor in the School of IAS, received a 2024 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. Each year, Undergraduate Research Symposium presenters nominate their mentors for this award. In one nomination, a student wrote, “Professor Padilla has been an incredible mentor throughout this project, helping guide my research, advising my writing and encouraging me to present my research. If it weren’t for her, I would never have the motivation nor the courage to participate in the Undergraduate Research Symposium. There were times when I was struggling to write or wanted to quit, but her patience and understanding helped me keep going.” Read more in the story on the symposium next month.

Puneet Birk, a senior in Law Economics & Public Policy, has received the 2024 Chancellor’s Medal. The award recognizes an individual who has been a consistent source of inspiration for fellow students and faculty alike, and has overcome significant obstacles or endured major challenges in order to complete their degree or certificate program.

Maxsim Poklonskii, a senior in Accounting, has received the 2024 President’s Medal. Each year the UW Bothell President’s Medalist is selected from among graduating undergraduate students with the most distinguished academic record, including GPA, courses taken, honors, awards, research and publications.

Levi Gutierrez, a senior in Educational Studies, has received the Leslie Ashbaugh Feminist Praxis in Education Award which recognizes Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies students who demonstrate inspiring and impactful feminist praxis while at UW Bothell.

Spotlight Session: IAS engagement practices Join Dr. Brinda Sarathy, dean of the School of IAS, and administrator Kelly McKee as they share their efforts to promote engagement among school faculty and staff. Register to attend this online session on Friday, June 7, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Capping off the quarter Support STEM students as they present their spring quarter capstones at various times and locations throughout campus on Friday, June 7. New this year is a STEM recognition event at 1 p.m. in DISC 061 which will include the presentation of the inaugural Sr. Chief Ronald G. Gamboa Endowed UW Bothell STEM Faculty Fellowship Award.

Summer Fundamentals for undergraduate researchers Encourage your students to participate in the Summer Fundamentals workshop series, June 18 to August 7. These workshops are ideal for students currently involved in summer research or those eager to start. They’ll walk away with the tools and knowledge to excel in their academic and professional journey. Learn more.

CELR class development The Office of Connected Learning’s Community-Engaged Learning Research team is seeking faculty who are interested in adding a community-engaged component to their 2024-25 courses. Complete the CELR partnership project form to start the process and learn more.

Performance review and merit process preparation Annual performance reviews for all UW Bothell faculty and staff should be completed no later than Monday, July 15. Faculty reviews should follow the usual processes as described in the UW Faculty Code. The updated forms to complete FY 24 performance reviews can be found on the OE/HR SharePoint site.
Supervisors can choose between one of two evaluation forms — one based on compassionate conversations and one with a structured approach. Whichever approach and form a supervisor chooses, the same must be used for all employees of that supervisor.

The newsletter’s name “The Mailroom” was inspired by Dr. Bruce Kochis, a long-time School of IAS faculty member who noted that in UW Bothell’s early days news was shared when staff and faculty would gather in one common mailroom to get their mail.
