Dr. Rachel Scherr, associate professor in the School of STEM, has received funding from the National Science Foundation to pursue “Collaborative Research: Training to Elicit and Leverage Ideas about Science.”

The Division of Academic Affairs has announced the recipients of two awards. Kristen Labrecque, natural science and pre-health professional pathways adviser, received the Distinguished Partner Award. Nhi P. Tran, assistant director for student success and initiatives, received the Distinguished Accomplishments Award.

Dr. Karam Dana, associate professor in the School of IAS, received the Arab American Community Service Award for “exemplary service to the Arab community of the Pacific Northwest.”

Spotlight: Active Threat Drill on May 6
|

The UW Bothell and Cascadia College campus will conduct an active threat drill on Monday, May 6, at 10 a.m. During this time, all faculty, staff and students are asked to take five minutes to discuss how you would respond to an incident where you are. Read this message from Vice Chancellor for Planning & Administration Gowri Shankar and Cham Kao, senior director for Campus Safety, for what to expect during the drill, discussion questions for your employees and students, and resources to help you prepare.
You are also invited to review the active threat training presentation — and encouraged to sign up for UW Bothell alerts to stay notified when incidents occur on or near campus.

from The Convergence Zone: MFA visiting writers speak You are invited to readings by writer Richard Chiem and MFA students Felicia Payomo and Bethany Hudson on Thursday, May 2, 6-7:30 p.m., in Founders Hall (UW1), room 261. This free event is part of the Convergence Zone series of author readings and artist talks/performances, sponsored by the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing & Poetics. It is also sponsored by Gamut, a literary series showcasing the diversity of creative voices within the community. Learn more.

IAS Faculty Research Salon Dr. Caleb Trujillo, assistant professor in the School of IAS, will present “Molecular storytelling as a framework for teaching biomolecules with case studies” on Tuesday, May 7, 1:15-3:15 p.m., in Discovery Hall (DISC), room 464. Learn more.

Fostering connections in AI and health The UW’s Population Health Initiative hosts this gathering to foster new collaborations between UW researchers who are interested in applying generative AI and large language models to pressing health challenges. Set for Wednesday, May 8, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the UW Husky Union Building, room 145, the event will be followed by an informal networking lunch. RSVP for the event. Email the PHI with any questions.

Interested in making your grading more equitable? Dr. Kevin Lin, assistant teaching professor in the UW's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, will discuss how instructors can use alternative grading approaches to develop more equitable, effective learning environments. The online session will be on Thursday, May 9, 12-1 p.m. Learn more and register.

The Office of Connected Learning is hosting workshops on mentoring undergraduates involved in experiential learning opportunities.

Partnership in an unequal world The UW Office of Global Affairs’ online workshop series that explores what it means to have mindful teaching, collaboration and program building in an unequal world concludes with a session on Tuesday, May 14, at 12:30 p.m. It will focus on institutional transformation, addressing the prompt, “How do you leverage the resources and navigate the structures of the UW in building more equitable partnerships?”
This workshop series for faculty, staff and students is co-facilitated by the School of IAS’ Dr. Ben Gardner, associate professor, and Dr. Ron Krabill, professor, along with Dr. Anu Taranath, teaching professor in the UW’s Department of English. Register for the workshop.

Designing for inclusive learning Explore how the basic principles of Universal Design for Learning can foster inclusion and learning in courses of any size or discipline. Learn more and register for this online session being held on Thursday, May 16, 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Undergraduate Research Symposium Undergraduates from all three UW campuses will share their research in a wide range of disciplines on Friday, May 17, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., during this 27th annual event celebrating undergraduate research, scholarship and creative work. It is also a space for students, faculty and the community to discuss the latest research. Learn more and support the 43 UW Bothell students presenting their work.

Husky Highlights series
Husky Highlights is a series featuring UW Bothell faculty and staff who are making advances in research, scholarship and creative practice.
On Tuesday, May 21, 5-6:30 p.m., Dr. Santiago Lopez, associate professor in the School of IAS, will report the findings of research conducted through a UW Bothell Scholarship, Research and Creative Practice grant: “New insights on the spatial dynamics of plant invasions in urban parks in the Pacific Northwest.” Learn more and register for this presentation being held at the Environmental Education & Research Center at Saint Edward State Park.
On Tuesday, June 4, 3:30-5 p.m., Dr. Veronica Cassone McGowan, lecturer in the School of Educational Studies, will present “Building racial equity-centered STEM courses for preservice elementary teachers” in Discovery Hall (DISC), room 152. Afterward, a workshop will unfold using the open-space method. Learn more and register.

The effects of jargon This webinar on Wednesday, May 29, 1:30-3 p.m., will explore the ways jargon influences college access and success for first-generation college students. Watch the webinar with colleagues in Founders Hall (UW1), room 103, and then discuss how to use the key ideas to support our students. Learn more.

Applications due May 15: Founders Fellow Summer Research Stipend This provides two to five awards up to $3,000 to UW Bothell undergraduate students participating in a structured research project over the summer. The application can be completed by either the mentor or the student. Learn more.

Applications due May 24: Methods Exploration and Enhancement Award This provides up to $2,000 for full-time UW Bothell faculty to enhance their research, teaching or creative practice methods. Learn more and apply.

Applications due May 24: Publication and Production Award This is for UW Bothell professorial track faculty and artists-in-residence seeking supplemental funds to assist with costs related to scholarly, creative and artistic publications and production. Learn more and apply.

Innovations & Improvements

Provide feedback on strategic plan As Chancellor Kristin G. Esterberg and General Faculty Organization Chair Nora Kenworthy shared in their recent message to the campus community about progress on UW Bothell’s current strategic plan, reports from four priority area working groups are now available online.
You are encouraged to review the reports and contribute to campus discussion by offering feedback through surveys (due May 9), joining a campus conversation on May 16 and participating in online discussions in May and June for each of the four priority areas. Learn more about these opportunities to contribute.

Respond by May 3: Potential uses for LB2 space After soliciting suggestions from the campus community on potential uses for the LB2 space, a common theme emerged: A desire to have a student-focused, community space that would provide student services, enliven the campus core and activate the Promenade.
All the suggestions have been compiled, and you have the opportunity to rank them using this online survey through Friday, May 3.

Respond by May 12: UW Community Engagement faculty and staff survey Stemming from the tri-campus capacity-building effort launched in 2022, the UW’s Community Engagement Leads are actively working to assess, evaluate and build community engagement supports for faculty, staff, students and community partners. Your input is valuable in helping build community engagement infrastructure at the UW. The end goal is to encourage robust community engagement partnerships by creating systems that make partnering easier. Complete the survey.

UW’s Title IX report is now available The 2021-2023 Title IX Biennial Report on Sex- and Gender-Based Violence and Harassment provides an overview of education and prevention efforts, Title IX reports and referrals, and formal complaints. For the first time, it incorporates employee data. It's a valuable resource for understanding how UW prevents and responds to violence and harassment.

Important change to MS Teams chat Microsoft Teams chat messages now expire after 30 days (effective May 1). This applies to all existing and new chat messages, including chat messages sent during meetings held in Teams. Learn more.

The newsletter’s name “The Mailroom” was inspired by Dr. Bruce Kochis, a long-time School of IAS faculty member who noted that in UW Bothell’s early days news was shared when staff and faculty would gather in one common mailroom to get their mail.
